Chapter Five

The uniformed police officer who woke Vanessa at fifteen minutes past midnight, told her that Dalton had been in an accident earlier that night while working at Lucky's. Panicked and fearing the worst, Vanessa pressed the officer for the details of what happened.

The officer informed her that Dalton had gotten into an altercation with two men, brothers named Matt and Jerry Lingam. According to the officer, the altercation led outside where Dalton was ambushed by a gang of Matt and Jerry’s friends. Vanessa listened with horror as the officer told her how Dalton was beaten and even stabbed with a switchblade by Matt’s brother, Jerry. Though visibly shaken, she managed to ask the officer why he thought to contact her. He told her that witnesses at the club said they had heard her name mentioned more than once during Dalton’s altercation with the two men. Then he asked if she knew Matt and Jerry Lingam.

“No,” she said flatly, “I’ve never even met them.”

“They’re the sons of Thomas Lingam,” the officer told her. “Ever heard of him?”

She had. In fact, everyone who lived in Morley, knew of Thomas Lingam. He was regarded as a big wheel there, and he wasn’t afraid to let everyone in town know it. He had bought out most of the businesses in town, and, those he didn’t own outright, he had a financial stake in them. Joseph Calla liked being around powerful men, and they didn’t come much more powerful than Thomas Lingam—at least in Morley. But Vanessa didn’t know anything about his sons, Matt and Jerry Lingam. At least, she thought she didn’t, until she was shown pictures of Matt and Jerry at the police station en route to the hospital where Dalton was being treated. It turned out Matt was the scumbag who tried to accost her at Lucky’s. A cold chill ran down her spine as she recalled that Matt threatened that he would “get Dalton” later for what he did to him. Apparently, he had made good on that threat and then some.

The scene wasn’t much better at the hospital where Vanessa was told by a doctor with a trained sympathetic look on his face, the extent of Dalton’s injuries: Along with the knife wound across his right side that required eleven stitches, his left ankle was broken and his left kneecap had been smashed. His nose likewise had been broken, and his right eye-socket almost shattered.

Vanessa’s heart sank and she felt as though she was going to faint, but she kept her composure to the best of her ability, considering the circumstances. But whatever composure she was able to muster, nearly dissipated altogether when Dalton came out of one of the rooms. His nose was
